Governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu of Lagos State has urged food processing companies to adopt biodegradable and compostable packaging materials as an eco-friendly option to promote environmental sustainability.

The governor made the call at the 11th edition of the PROPAK West Africa 2024: Smart Packaging Conference held at Landmark Event Centre, Lagos.

Represented by the Commissioner for Commerce, Cooperatives, Trade, and Investment, Mrs. Folashade Ambrose-Medebem, Sanwo-Olu emphasized the role of the food packaging industry in driving economic growth, calling for the sector to pivot towards eco-friendly solutions.

“The industries represented here today form the backbone of Nigeria’s economy, supporting key areas such as food, pharmaceuticals, agriculture, and consumer goods. Sustainable packaging is critical to reducing food waste and ensuring national growth,” the governor stated.

He highlighted that up to 40% of food produced in Nigeria is lost due to inadequate packaging, urging stakeholders to embrace sustainable technologies and collaborate across sectors to manage plastic waste.

The Managing Director of Lagos Waste Management Authority (LAWMA), Dr. Muyiwa Gbadegesin, noted that food loss is a global challenge and a contributor to environmental degradation.

He referenced Lagos State’s ban on single-use plastics, a significant step towards promoting sustainable packaging.

Gbadegesin outlined innovative solutions, including bioplastics and plant-based materials, as critical to reducing waste and meeting consumer demands for eco-friendly products.

“Sustainable packaging is not just about product safety but also about protecting the environment,” he added.

Also speaking at the event, the Director-General of the Manufacturers Association of Nigeria (MAN), Segun Ajayi, affirmed the organization’s commitment to prioritising smart packaging and ensuring access to nutritious food.

The conference featured various industry leaders and experts, all advocating for a greener future in packaging practices.
