The Super Eagles secured a comfortable 3-0 victory over Benin Republic in their opening 2025 Africa Cup of Nations qualifier at the Godswill Akpabio Stadium on Saturday.

The game saw former Eagles coach Gernot Rohr return to the country for the first time, seeking another victory for the Squirrels after defeating Nigeria 2-1 in a 2028 World Cup qualifier in Ivory Coast in June.

Europa League winner Ademola Lookman broke the deadlock for the Eagles with a classy goal, finding the back of the net in the second minute of first half stoppage time.

This ensured the Eagles went into half time one goal ahead.

At the beginning of the second half, the Eagles found it hard to add to their tally, as the visitors pushed for equaliser.

New Galatasaray forward, Victor Osimhen who had just come in as a substitute for Victor Boniface, put the Eagles 2-0 ahead in the 79th minute, before Lookman scored his second of the game to give Nigeria a 3-0 lead four minutes later.
