On Thursday, the Nigerian Senate passed the South West Development Commission Establishment Bill 2024, marking a significant step towards the socio-economic growth of the South West region.

The bill passed its third reading during the Senate’s plenary session, following a report presented by Senator Kaka Shehu Lawan, the Chairman of the Senate Committee on Special Duties. Senator Kaka highlighted that the bill is well-structured to promote the region’s socio-economic development.

According to Senator Kaka, if the bill receives presidential approval, the South West Development Commission will be established, similar to other regional commissions. This commission would receive funding from the federation account and donations from development partners to tackle infrastructure deficits and environmental issues in the South West.

After reviewing the bill clause by clause, the Senate approved it for the third and final reading.

Senate Deputy President, Barau Jibrin, who presided over the session, praised Senator Kaka’s committee for their work. He expressed confidence that the commission would help address infrastructure and ecological challenges in the South West, in line with the development efforts being made nationwide.

Jibrin noted that President Bola Tinubu had already approved similar commissions for other regions and is expected to give his assent to this bill as well, aiming to accelerate development across Nigeria.
