Ahead of the crucial quarter-final clash between the Super Eagles of Nigeria and the Palancas Negras of Angola, the principal officers of the National Assembly will visit Abidjan, Cote d’Ivoire, to cheer on the Nigerian team at the ongoing Africa Cup of Nations, AFCON.

The Super Eagles are billed to face Angola’s Palancas Negras in a quarterfinal clash at the ongoing 34th AFCON in Côte d’Ivoire on Friday.

The Senate Committee on Sports chairman, Senator Kawu Sumaila, stated this while addressing journalists on Thursday in Abuja.

The Super Eagles defeated the Indomitable Lions of Cameroon during the round of 16 to qualify for the quarterfinals at the Felix Houphouet Boigny Stadium.

The Senator said, apart from the principal officers, members of the National Assembly joint committees on sports will also travel to Abidjan to support the Super Eagles.

Kawu said, “I am happy with the performance of the Nigerian team at the ongoing Africa Cup of Nations.

“The principal officers of the National Assembly and the two Committees on Sports will also be in Cote d’Ivoire to watch the quarter-finals with Angola.”

He also said the National Assembly would look at the fate of the coach of the Super Eagles, Jose Peseiro, after the tournament.

He said, “We will look at it (the coach’s fate), after the competition, I am sure of victory for the Super Eagles against Angola.”

Both teams boast a youthful squad, with an average age of 26 years, as they set their sights on a crucial victory to secure a spot in the AFCON semifinals.

The winner between Nigeria and Angola on Friday at 6pm will, on February 7, 2024, be at the 40,000-capacity Peace Stadium in Bouake to face the winner of Cape Verde vs. South Africa to be played Friday night.

The AFCON tournament started on January 13, and its final will be played on February 11.
