Former President Goodluck Jonathan has stepped in to mediate the escalating political conflict in Rivers State, urging Governor Siminalayi Fubara and Minister of the Federal Capital Territory Nyesom Wike to set aside their differences and collaborate for the benefit of the state’s citizens.
Jonathan made this appeal on Monday during the unveiling ceremony of the Trans-Kalabari Road. Highlighting a growing trend of discord between governors and their predecessors across the country, the former President warned that such conflicts are detrimental to both followers and residents of the affected states.
“Outgoing governors and incoming governors must know that they work together for the collective interest of the citizens of the state, and that is critical,” Jonathan stated. “In the case of Rivers, Honourable Minister Nyesom Wike and Governor Sim Fubara must work together to develop the land and people of Rivers State. The tension will not help us.”
Jonathan’s call for unity echoed sentiments from other leaders and concerned citizens who have been advocating for peace. He stressed that political actors need to prioritize the well-being of the Rivers people by fostering a collaborative environment.
“So, I urge political actors; you must work together if you love the Rivers people. I join the leaders of Rivers State and well-meaning Nigerians who have been calling for a truce and ceasefire to also reemphasize that there is a need for a ceasefire. Let us do things that would rather project the state,” he concluded.
The ongoing feud between Fubara and Wike has raised concerns about governance and development in Rivers State, making Jonathan’s intervention a crucial step towards resolving the conflict and promoting stability in the region.
