A third year student of Industrial Design Department, Federal University of Technology, Akure, Olona Oluwapelumi Joseph, poularly known as ‘Black’ has allegedly hanged himself at his off-campus residence in the Ondo State capital.
According to NAN, Joseph’s body was discovered hanged in his room on Saturday by his friends who went to look for him after they were unable to get him on the phone early Saturday morning.
On getting to his residence, the friends had discovered that Oluwapelumi’s room door was locked.
The friends decided to break the door after he failed to respond to the numerous phone calls.
The friends discovered the body of the student, popularly known as “Black”, hanging in the room after they gained entry.
Some of the student’s neighbours described him as jovial and friendly man, who never entered into arguments or fought with anyone.
There were speculations that the student took his life because of depression and financial constraint because of some cryptic post discovered by his friends on his Facebook page.
One of the neighbours said that it was discovered that the Facebook page of the deceased, who was an entrepreneur and made designer wears with the brand name “Tart Angle”, contained a post about suicide.
According to him, several of the deceased’s posts also contained messages seeking financial help to enable him to run his business.
“On October 8, 2022, his Facebook post read, “Suicide kinda answers all, it’s the only thing that listens and trusts you when you left all to your self. Good night and good bye,” the neighbour said.
Meanwhile, FUTA authorities have yet to make an official statement on the student’s death.
The spokesperson of the police command in Ondo, SP Funmi Odunlami-Omisanya confirmed the death of the student.
She said his remains have been deposited at a mortuary while investigation into the death would soon start.
