In a deadly assault on New Year’s Day, the FBI has unveiled how a vicious attack unfolded in the heart of New Orleans, claiming the lives of at least 10 people and leaving dozens more injured.
The chilling incident took place around 3:15 a.m. CST on Bourbon Street, a popular thoroughfare known for its lively nightlife and crowds.
According to the FBI‘s statement, the assailant, later identified as 42-year-old Shamsud-Din Jabbar, a U.S. citizen from Texas, drove a Ford pickup truck into a bustling crowd, causing mass chaos and death.
The FBI said the truck appeared to have been rented, and is working to trace its origins, saying Jabbar’s attack was far from over, explaining that after mowing down pedestrians, he exited the vehicle and opened fire on local law enforcement officers who had rushed to the scene.
The officers responded swiftly, engaging Jabbar, and he was pronounced dead at the scene. Tragically, two officers were wounded in the exchange of gunfire and were immediately transported to a nearby hospital, though their conditions remain unknown.
The FBI said inside the truck, investigators discovered an ISIS flag, sparking concerns of a possible terrorist affiliation.

The FBI confirmed that the attack is being treated as an act of terrorism, with agents now working to identify any connections Jabbar may have had with terrorist organizations.
Weapons, including a potential IED (Improvised Explosive Device), were also found in the vehicle. More such devices were reportedly located in the French Quarter, heightening fears of further attacks.
FBI special agent bomb technicians are currently collaborating with local law enforcement to assess the viability of the devices, ensuring they are safely neutralized.
Authorities have launched a full-scale investigation, determined to track down any potential associates of Jabbar and prevent further tragedy.
In a bid to uncover more details, the FBI has urged the public to come forward with any information or videos related to the incident, establishing a digital tip line for anyone who may have witnessed the attack or captured it on camera.
This devastating assault marks a dark chapter for New Orleans, with the full extent of Jabbar’s motives still under investigation.
