Urges govt to sustain ongoing reforms, allocate more resources to police
The Inspector-General of Police, Kayode Egbetokun, has said that the Police would adhere strictly on whatever decision the Federal Government takes on the issue of state police.
Egbetokun, who spoke, yesterday, during a visit to the Lagos State Police Command, said that the Force decided to clear the air on the issue in view of many debates and opinions on the matter.
The IGP, who spoke through the Coordinating Deputy Inspector-General of Police, South-West, Abiodun Alabi, charged men and officers of the command to be discipline, hard working, and to respect human rights. He also urged them to carry out their duties in the most professional style.
The police boss said the Force was already working with some consultants to build befitting accommodations for the officers and men, adding that very soon, the personnel would access their own homes.
He warned against rivalry with other sister-security organisations, stressing that Nigeria Police alone would not provide the needed security for Nigerians.
He charged them to always work harmoniously with other security agencies with a view to providing security for Nigerians.
Earlier, the Commissioner of Police in Lagos State, Adegoke Fayoade, said that all the security architectures put in place in collaboration with stakeholders had brought down crimes in the state.
In another vein, Egbetokun has called on the Federal Government to sustain its commitment to ongoing reform efforts within the Nigeria Police Force (NPF), allocate sufficient budgetary resources to the police to address critical needs, and take decisive action to combat corruption and impunity within the NPF.
Egbetokun made the call, yesterday, while delivering the first distinguished personality lecture of the TETFUND Centre of Excellence in Multidisciplinary Studies of the University of Ibadan held at Trenchard Hall of the institution.
In his lecture, titled: “The Nigeria Police Force and the Management of Internal Security,” the IGP said that despite numerous challenges faced by the police in managing internal security during crises, there had been notable achievements that demonstrate their potential and resilience.
Earlier in his remarks, the Vice Chancellor of UI, Prof. Olukayode Adebowale, described the IGP as an exemplary police officer. He urged him to put more efforts on security of life and property across the states of the federation.
Also, a popular security scholar, Prof. Olawale Albert, lauded the IGP for strides in education and professionalism. The Pro-Chancellor of Lead City University, Ibadan, Prof. Babajide Owoeye, was the special guest of honour while Dr Benjamin Aluko was the host.
