    Stroke Action Nigeria, in collaboration with national, regional and international partners, will commemorate World Stroke Day 2024. World Stroke Day is marked on October 29 of every year.

    A press statement by the organisation said this annual event, led by the World Stroke Organisation, aims to raise awareness about stroke prevention and to also encourage individuals to act.

    Theme, ‘Be #GreaterThanStroke’,
    This year’s campaign emphasises the importance of stroke prevention, highlighting that one in four individuals would experience a stroke in their lifetime.

    However, Stroke Action Nigeria noted in the press release that almost all strokes could be prevented by managing nine key risk factors to include hypertension, diabetes, atrial fibrillation, obesity and overweight, lack of exercise and physical activity, and smoking, as well as alcohol drinking habits.

    The organisation also emphasised that managing high cholesterol levels and diets high in fat and salt would be a good means of preventing stroke.

    Meanwhile, to prevent strokes, Stroke Action Nigeria has urged everyone to engage in daily 30 minutes of physical activity such as walking, biking, running, swimming – Yoga, team sports such football and basketball, among others.

    To deepen the stroke awareness, Stroke Action Nigeria is working closely with the Federal Ministry of Health’s non-communicable diseases team; African Stroke Organisation (regional partner), as well as the World Stroke Organisation (as international partner).

    In another development, Rita Melifonwu, the founder and chief executive officer of Stroke Action Nigeria has been re-elected into the World Stroke Organisation’s Board of Directors for another four-year term.

    She will continue to play a key role in the World Stroke Campaign Committee, Membership Committee, and Advisory Board, focusing on reducing the burden of strokes in Africa.

    Meanwhile, Stroke Action Nigeria has invited everyone to join the global effort to prevent strokes, saying “Together, we can be #GreaterThanStroke.
