Wojciech Szczesny, a former Polish international footballer, recently shared his reasons for coming out of retirement to sign with FC Barcelona. He made this decision after discussions with his fellow countryman Robert Lewandowski and input from family members.
Just weeks after announcing his retirement from professional football, Szczesny revealed that his loved ones encouraged him to accept Barcelona’s offer. They expressed that it would be “very foolish” for him to turn down such an opportunity.

Szczesny noted that Lewandowski, who currently plays for Barcelona, was the first person to contact him about the chance to join the club. “I’m so proud to be at Barça and I’m ready for this challenge! Lewandowski was the first person to call me last week,” said the 34-year-old goalkeeper after finalizing his short-term contract with the team.
He admitted that it took some persuasion to change his mind. “At first, I wasn’t sure I was ready, but my friends and family told me that if I didn’t accept Barça’s proposal, I would be very stupid,” Szczesny explained. “I agree with them! This club is just fantastic.”
Barcelona sought Szczesny as a replacement after losing their first-choice goalkeeper, Marc-Andre ter Stegen, to a knee injury. The experienced goalkeeper is anticipated to make his La Liga debut for Barcelona on Sunday, October 6, 2024, in a match against Alaves.
