The United States Consul General to Nigeria, Will Stevens, has declared Tems his favourite afrobeats star.

During a recent visit by popular Nigerian comedian Basketmouth to the US Consulate in Lagos, Stevens engaged in a lighthearted conversation about his favorite things in Nigeria.

When the topic turned to music, Stevens revealed his preference for Tems, praising her as “incredible and one of the best.”

While acknowledging his familiarity with other top Nigerian artists like Fireboy, Asake, and Davido, Stevens emphasized his particular connection to Tems’ music.

“I have met a bunch of them, but Tems is the one that I can tune in anytime.” He said.

His admiration extends beyond just her overall artistry. Stevens specifically highlighted Tems’ rendition of Bob Marley’s “No Woman, No Cry” in the Black Panther sequel, admitting, “That voice… I got a little bit of a crush. Just listening to her on the ‘Black Panther’…”

This public endorsement comes amidst Tems’ meteoric rise to international stardom. In February 2023, she secured her first Grammy Award for “Best Melodic Rap Performance” on Future’s hit song “Wait for U” featuring Drake.

More recently, she received the “Breakthrough Award” at the 2024 Billboard Women in Music Awards.

Tems, whose real name is Temilade Openiyi, has captivated audiences worldwide with her unique blend of vocals and songwriting prowess.

Consul General Stevens’ endorsement adds to the growing recognition of her exceptional talent.
