She had a secret crush on one of her male customers, but he only liked wealthy, high-class women. So, Isioma pretended to be rich to get his attention, and he believed her lie. After six months of dating, she got tired of pretending, especially since he kept asking her for money.

“He was my customer. I sold men’s wear. He would always come to my boutique to shop, and we became friends. He is a good-looking young man: light-skinned and always looking good with a nice smile. Through our conversation, I noticed he liked dating rich ladies. He liked it when a lady is independent and earns her own money or from a wealthy background. He looked rich, he only told me he was into the export business and I didn’t bother to ask further. He would tell me about some rich ladies he met in Abuja, and how one of them sponsored their trip to France and spoiled him with money. I think he had many such ladies. When he asked about me, I told him a sweet lie; I lied to him that I had lands in the East and two houses in different locations in Lagos, I also told him that my father owned an estate and that as the only child, I am the sole heir to all that my parents had. After I told him those lies, I noticed he became more interested in me. He would visit my shop more often just to check up on me. Later he told me he loved me and would like us to date. I knew it was because of the rich girl impression I gave him, and I fancied him, too. We started dating. We shared bills whenever we went out, and he was fun to be with except that he is a gold-digger. Even while we were together, he always looked out for these sophisticated ladies. Whenever he saw a lady that looked rich, he would want to make friends with her. He kept pestering me to show him my houses but I told him I put them on rent, and after six months I got tired of him. The only thing he liked doing was to do fine boy, go to clubs, drink, and have sex. If I refused to have sex with him, he would call another lady in my presence. He would always tell me there were many fishes in the river. He was always asking me to lend him money. One day I told him I was not a rich lady. I had to tell him the truth. I was already fed up and wanted to end the relationship. From the beginning, I knew the relationship wasn’t a serious one. I stopped texting him and answering his calls. And whenever he came to my boutique, I would leave. I think he got the message and stopped coming around. But recently he came back begging me to start with him again, he looked serious this time but I don’t know his intentions.”

Dear Isioma, I am not sure how you feel about him, but if you ask me, going back to your ex isn’t a good idea. From what you said, you broke up after telling him the truth about yourself. How can you be sure he’s not coming back for revenge? He might want to hurt you the way you hurt him. It’s probably best to leave the past in the past. Plus, lying about your status to attract him was a red flag and not a smart move.
