The Nigerian Electricity Regulatory Commission (NERC) has warned that there are severe penalties stipulated in the Electricity Act 2023 for the theft of energy.
NERC made this warning during a presentation by NERC Assistant General Manager, Michael Faloseyi, at a Civic Forum on Energy Security organised by the Conference of Civil Societies and Centre for Civil-Military Cooperation (CIMICO) on Tuesday.
The forum noted the need for collective effort in safeguarding Nigeria’s energy infrastructure, with key stakeholders from various sectors in attendance.
NERC officials presented insightful papers. NERC Deputy General Manager, Tariff and Rates, Abba Terab, discussed “Electricity Tariff Review: The Issues and the Myths,” addressing the circumstances necessitating the recent tariff reviews.
NERC Assistant General Manager, Government, External & Industry Relations, Michael Faloseyi, made a presentation on “Monitoring Performance and Mitigating Energy Theft at the Grassroots: The Role of Civil Societies.”
Faloseyi underscored the causes, consequences, and penalties of electricity theft, urging more collaboration with civil society to curb this menace.
The specifics of the penalties, however, were not disclosed in the report, but the punishments are part of the Electricity Act of 2023.
