The Minister of Women Affairs, Uju Kennedy-Ohaneye, has said that there is no money in the ministry.

She said this on Monday on the backdrop of the alleged non-payment of N1.5 billion to contractors after the release of funds.

The House of Representatives Committee on Women’s Affairs and Social Development had grilled the minister over the issue last Tuesday.

But during the interview on Channels TV’s Politics Today, Kennedy-Ohaneye said that the ministry was underfunded.

She said, “Some people will not even give you time to explain how you spend the money. Fuel costs a lot since I came into office. How can I say yes or no without giving an explanation? I have explained the issue of N20million and that of N45 million.

“Thirty three schools of thousands of students were given bags and gifts including lunch. And we gave them logistics to come for that party. This has been the routine of the women affairs ministry.

“I need more programmes. I need more impactful movements that will change the lives of Nigerians. We distributed empowerment machines to 36 states including the FCT. I equally gave Kekes (tricycles).

“I have never applied for money. There is no money in the ministry of women affairs. I sourced for money for most of the things I do. We are underfunded.”
