Five Star Logistics Terminal has introduced an automated pedestrian access gate at the Tin Can Island Port, Lagos to elevate security, efficiency and operational effectiveness in port activities.
Unveiled yesterday, the automated gate features cutting-edge facial recognition technology and an electronic card system, while the modernisation is expected to streamline port entry, reduce logistics costs, and improve overall service delivery for port users.
Recall that there have been concerns over the high rate of pilfering and stealing of vehicle parts at the port terminal, with stakeholders calling for urgent attention to address the situation.
At the inauguration, the Terminal Manager of Five Star Logistics, Mr. Jaysing Kamthe, highlighted the strategic importance of the e-Gate, saying: “Since our management took over in 2006, it has been our goal to implement advanced access control to enhance efficiency at this multipurpose cargo terminal.”
Kamthe further explained that the system would not only restrict access to authorised individuals but also significantly speed up the cargo handling process, enabling quicker clearance and delivery. He said only individuals who are verified and have business at the terminal can access the facility, ensuring a more organised and secure environment.
In efforts to combat theft and other illicit activities, the terminal has also ramped up its surveillance capabilities, expanding from 24 to 70 CCTV cameras.
Despite the high-tech upgrade, Kamthe assured that the cost to port users would remain minimal as the terminal aims to facilitate trade and not burden it with additional costs.
The Port Manager of Tin Can Island Port, Sylvester Egede, urged other terminals within the port to adopt similar technologies to enhance data generation, security and operational efficiency.
According to him, automation is crucial for modern port management as it not only ensures security but also improves the sanity and throughput of the port.
The event drew numerous stakeholders, including freight forwarders and agencies, who were given demonstrations of the new e-services and a hands-on experience with the automated gate.
Also speaking, the Customs Area Controller at Tin Can Island Port, Dera Nnadi, called for cooperation among stakeholders to optimise the use of the new system and address any potential challenges, emphasising the collective responsibility to uphold the integrity of the port’s operations.
