- Claims No Leadership Crises In LP
- Says Obi Remains The Best Candidate For 2027
From Idu Jude, Abuja
Honourable Chidi Obeta, representing Nsukka/Igbo-Ezeh South Federal Constituency in the House of Representatives, has condemned the proposed celebration of President Bola Ahmed Tinubu’s one year in office, calling it an insult to the suffering Nigerian masses.
In an exclusive interview with Daily Sun, Obeta emphasised the need to address the “undiluted assault” on Nigerians by the ruling party’s leadership and challenged the APC government to fulfil its 2023 campaign promises.
He criticised the government’s “mediocrity, lies, and deceit,” questioning the rationale behind celebrating amidst the hardship, insecurity, and economic challenges faced by Nigerians. He highlighted the rising cost of living, electricity tariffs, and disregard for the rule of law as evidence of the government’s failures.
Regarding the opposition’s role in challenging the ruling party, Obeta acknowledged the urgency of addressing immediate needs like hunger and starvation, which he estimates affect 90% of Nigerians. He emphasised the ongoing efforts of the opposition, including the successful interventions in stopping electricity tariff hikes and reducing building material costs. He also clarified the public’s limited visibility of these efforts due to the thoroughness and documentation involved in parliamentary activities.
Obeta dismissed media claims of leadership crises within the Labour Party, stating that neither the NLC owns the party nor did any of its members contest leadership positions. He clarified that the party constitution does not allow for multiple leaderships, and the INEC still recognises Julius Abure as the National Chairman.
He attributed the rumoured internal conflicts to the party’s growing popularity, making it a “beautiful bride” for acquisition. However, he emphasised that the party’s constitution mandates the NLC and TUC to provide the National Vice-Chairman position, which has been fulfilled.
Obeta commended Peter Obi’s leadership and commitment to fulfilling his campaign promises, even in the North, despite not winning the presidency. He defended Obi’s recent visit to PDP members, explaining it as his nature as a “complete politician” and his commitment to fulfilling promises made during the campaign. He also highlighted Obi’s history of maintaining relationships with political opponents and emphasised his belief that Obi remains the best choice for president in 2027.
