The acting Controller General of the Nigeria Correctional Service (NCoS), Sylvester Nwakuche, has warned personnel that the service would not tolerate any abuse of inmates in their custody.

He called on officers and men of the service to display the right attitude in the discharge of their duty, especially towards inmates.

Speaking during a lecture for the officers in Abuja with the theme: “Character Overhaul and Attitudinal Change”, Nwakuche said the call for attitude adjustment became necessary as the service was aiming at holistic reforms, focusing on rehabilitation, reformation, and redemption.

“I have told you about the expectations of President Bola Tinubu and the Minister of Interior, Dr Olubunmi Tunji-Ojo.

“If we don’t change our attitude, we don’t overhaul our character, the workforce will be toxic and when an environment is toxic, nothing is progressive and everything will become redundant.

“We must prioritise mutual respect, empathy, and professionalism in our interactions with inmates. This will foster public trust and confidence in our ability to reform and rehabilitate,” he said.

Nwakuche pledged to create a conducive work environment, soliciting support from personnel while urging them to embrace the changes.

In his lecture, the resource person, Dr Joseph Danley, the National President of the Foundation for Correction of Moral Decadence, stressed patriotism and love as vital for national growth and development.

“Without patriotism, our collective progress is hindered. We must instill these values in our daily interactions, promoting a culture of excellence and integrity,” he said.
