The United Nations (UN) has committed to aiding the Enugu State Government in achieving the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) by 2030 to enhance the well-being of the people of Enugu.

This commitment was made by the UN Resident and Humanitarian Coordinator in Nigeria, Mohamed Fall, during a working visit to Governor Peter Mbah in Enugu on Friday.

Fall praised Mbah’s leadership, describing it as the ideal model for Nigeria, the UN, and Africa, as he decorated the governor as a Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) champion.

Fall emphasized Africa’s need for positive stories, highlighting the importance of supporting leadership models that exhibit vision, drive, discipline, rigorous planning, and improved efficiency to transform narratives and inspire hope.

During his visit, Fall met with the state’s Executive Council and participated in an interactive session with the media. He acknowledged the challenges international communities face in fulfilling their commitments to the people. He noted that with only six years left to achieve the SDGs by 2030, many countries, including Nigeria, still struggle with the Millennium Development Goals (MDGs).

Fall commended Mbah’s achievements in critical sectors such as education, healthcare, and water, noting his ability to eliminate inefficiencies and improve effectiveness in a short period.

“We are tired of states and nations continually facing conflicts and issues. Every success in Enugu has the potential to change the narrative about Nigeria and Africa,” Fall stated.

He praised leaders who strive to enhance the well-being of their people despite challenges, saying, “Mbah’s leadership has inspired me. It embodies exactly what we need in the African Continent and the United Nations.”
