The Commandant of the Nigeria Security and Civil Defence Corps (NSCDC) in Gombe State, Muhammad Bello, announced on Sunday that Yahaya Buba, the uncle responsible for the severe injury of his 21-year-old nephew, will be charged with attempted murder.
Bello condemned the act of tying Adamu Mohammed’s hands, which allegedly happened because of a stolen phone.
This restraint led to the loss of blood flow and ultimately necessitated the amputation of Mohammed’s arms.
“We are charging him for attempted murder. What he did was an attempt on the boy’s life, for life he has incapacitated him,” The PUNCH quoted Bello as saying.
Addressing rumours that the Corps might release Buba due to his close relationship with the victim, Bello criticised the victim’s father for misusing the money provided for his son’s treatment.
“We are not going to release him (the perpetrator). Initially, we also arrested the biological father for his act of cruelty. The money given to him by the uncle for treatment was misused, and he fled, leaving his son to suffer. He did not provide proper treatment for the boy, even though the culprit, Yahaya Buba, had provided the necessary funds,” he said.
Bello also criticised a Non-Governmental Organization (NGO) for falsely claiming credit for Mohammed’s treatment.
“We will investigate Gongola Charity Foundation’s claims, as they are not accurate. It is dubious for them to take credit for doing nothing. The NSCDC has been taking care of the boy, in line with its mandate to defend the defenceless,” he added.
