    PORT HARCOURT – Members of a local vigilance group, known as Diobu vigilantes have discovered a day-old male Infant abandoned in an open manhole along Ikwerre road by Ekwe street, Mile 3 Diobu, Port Harcourt.

    The dead infant was found in the morning hours of Tuesday, as residents and passersby watched the unpleasant discovery in utter disgust, laying curses on the unknown mother who must have abandoned it.

    Narrating how the security outfit came about the early morning discovery, the Chief Security Officer of Nkpolu-Oroworokwo community, attached to vigilance group, Godstime Ihunwo, said upon discovery of the abandoned lifeless infant, they informed the Police of the development.

    Ihunwo said, “At the early hours of today, 23rd July, 2024 at about 5am. I and my team were on patrol. On getting to Ikwerre road by Ekwe street, Mile 3 Diobu, Port Harcourt. We discovered that a new born baby was dumped into a manhole.

    “We discovered that the baby was dead. It was a male child. I quickly rushed down to Nkpolu Police Division and lodged an entry. I also contacted Prince Wiro who is a human rights activist.”

    Also reacting to the development, Mr Prince Wiro, the National Coordinator of Centre for Basic Rights Protection and Accountability Campaign, condemned the action of the yet-to-be-identified mother, who abandoned her child, describing it as the height of wickedness.

    The rights activist also used the medium to urge residents who may have an idea of the perpetrators to report to the police.

    Wiro said, “It is sad that before the vigilance group discovered the infant, it was already dead.

    “The action of the mother of the child is a crime that is punishable under the Nigeria law.

    “We use this opportunity to urge residents who may have useful information about the identity of the child’s mother to report to the Police for necessary action.”

    The state Police Command is yet to comment on the sad development.
