The Economic and Financial Crimes Commission, EFCC said its operatives arrested 117 suspected internet fraudsters during the controversial sting operation on Regional Hotel in Lagos.

In a statement by Dele Oyewale, its spokesperson, EFCC said the sting operation was carried by operatives of the Lagos zonal command based on intelligence of their alleged involvement of the suspects in internet fraud at the facility.

“The suspects were arrested at Regional Hotel, Iyana- Ishasi, Lagos in a sting operation, following verified intelligence about their alleged involvement in computer-related fraud.

The anti-graft agency said items recovered from the suspects, at the point of arrest, include mobile phones, laptop computers and four cars.

It added that the suspects will be charged to court as soon as investigations are concluded.

However, the sting operation by EFCC at Regional Hotel had come under criticisms after video emerged of the operatives of the Commission assaulting staff of the facility.

In response, EFCC Chairman, Ola Olukoyede, according to a statement by the Commission, ordered the arrest of two officers of the Commission allegedly involved in the manhandling of the female staff.

“The officers were sighted in a viral video assaulting the staff of the hotel in an early morning sting operation in Lagos. The operation yielded a sizable number of suspects who are still being profiled.

“The EFCC’s boss has also ordered detailed investigations of the operation carried out at the hotel and assured that appropriate disciplinary measures would be taken against any of the officers found to be culpable.

“Olukoyede assures the general public that the EFCC would continue to ply its job professionally and with profound respect for the rule of law,” Oyewale said in a statement.
