Players and officials of the Super Eagles are expected to hit Uyo, Akwa Ibom State, this weekend to begin preparations for the 2026 World Cup qualifier against the Bafana Bafana of South Africa.
The Super Eagles with just two points are currently third in Group C behind Rwanda and South Africa after two matches. This makes the June 7 clash with the visiting South Africans a must-win at the Nest of Champions in Uyo.
The Super Eagles are looking to record their first win in Group C after two draws against Lesotho and Zimbabwe.
As the case in the past, when the Super Eagles found itself in similar situations in the World Cup qualifiers, the results have forced many Nigerians into the calculation table in the race to the 2026 showpiece to be co-hosted by the United States of America, Canada and Mexico.
In a message to The Guardian, yesterday, the proprietor of Cable Football Academy, Edwin Onovwotafe said: “Things are not looking good for the Super Eagles in our group, and the only option we have to remedy the situation is to beat Bafana Bafana in Uyo and go to Abidjan to beat Benin Republic.
“I believe that we have the players to do the job. They need it more because if we fail to qualify for the 2026 World Cup like we did in Qatar, so many of the players won’t have the opportunity to play in the FIFA World Cup again.
“Apart from the players, the fans are looking forward to making the party to the U.S., Canada, and Mexico in 2026. If we win these two matches, we can sit down and plan for the remaining six qualifiers in 2025.
“Coach Finidi and the players should know our expectations as we build towards the battle of Uyo,” Onovwotafe stated.
