The Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) has committed to using the upcoming Ondo State governorship election to address the issues experienced in previous elections, particularly in Edo.

Prof. Mahmood Yakubu, the National Chairman of INEC, made this promise on Monday while speaking to journalists when he arrived in Akure, the state capital, to assess the commission’s readiness for the November 16 gubernatorial election.

Yakubu identified significant challenges, such as the late opening of polling units and difficulties in result collation, and emphasised that the electoral body is prepared to improve.

“We have learned valuable lessons not only from the last election but also from previous ones. Essentially, there are two main challenges: first, the logistics of ensuring polling units open promptly on election day; and second, managing results effectively.

“My assurance to voters in Ondo State is that they will see significant improvements in both processes,” he stated.

He assured the people of the state that election materials would arrive early and that results would be managed appropriately.

Yakubu explained that his visit was aimed at observing the situation firsthand and engaging with stakeholders to ensure a peaceful, free, fair and credible election.

He also announced plans to witness a mock accreditation of voters in six selected polling units—two in each senatorial district—scheduled for Wednesday this week.
