Lagos State Governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu on Monday welcomed the United Kingdom’s Foreign Secretary, Mr. David Lammy, at the State House in Marina.
This courtesy visit, marking Lammy’s first trip to Africa, aimed to explore the UK’s new approach to relations with the continent.
Accompanied by the British High Commissioner to Nigeria, Dr. Richard Montgomery, and Deputy High Commissioner Jonny Baxter, Lammy expressed the significance of Lagos as his first stop in Africa, highlighting the enduring socio-cultural and economic ties between Nigeria and the UK.
He noted the large number of Nigerian families with ties to the UK, underscoring the importance of mutual relations in trade, finance, and remittances.
Lammy described his mission as one of fostering deeper bilateral ties and expanding trade opportunities.
“Lagos, a dynamic economic hub for Nigeria and West Africa, exemplifies the vibrancy and potential we seek in our partnerships with Africa. This city’s values align with our commitment to mutual economic growth,” he said.

He voiced his interest in enhancing collaboration in other sectors, remarking, “The UK is open for more business with our old friends in Lagos—a relationship that continues to be mutually beneficial.”
He also discussed potential collaborations with UK firms interested in investing in Lagos’s clean energy initiatives, which could strengthen the city’s resilience to climate change.
In response, Governor Sanwo-Olu expressed alignment with the UK’s trade approach, highlighting Lagos’s efforts to support its young, skilled population.
He mentioned the state’s focus on knowledge-based training and business opportunities, particularly in waste management, noting that Lagos generates over 10,000 metric tons of waste daily, a potential resource for clean energy production.
“We want you to leave with the confidence that Lagos is a prime investment destination. We remain committed to making Lagos more business-friendly and supportive of growth opportunities,” Sanwo-Olu affirmed.
