    ABUJA – A recent workshop in Abuja, funded by the Kingdom of Norway, gathered key stakeholders to verify, plan, and promote long-term growth in Nigeria’s blue economy, leveraging the nation’s abundant maritime resources, according to the Inter-Africa Bureau for Animal Resources. 

    Held from October 14 to 16, 2024, this final validation workshop focused on Nigeria’s draft national blue economy strategy. Discussions included sustainable energy, governance, blue tourism, fisheries, and shipping. 

    The workshop began with welcome remarks from Mr. Georges Asseko of the African Union, followed by statements from Mr. Obinna Anozie and Nigeria’s Minister for the Blue Economy, Gboyega Oyetola. 

    This session introduced the workshop’s goals and highlighted the significance of the Blue Economy in Nigeria.

    Dr. Patrick Karani provided an overview of the Africa Blue Economy Strategy, leading into technical discussions on the next steps for implementing Nigeria’s drafted strategy. 

    Participants then split into smaller groups to delve into specific topics, including sustainable energy, governance, blue tourism, fisheries, and shipping, following group discussions and photo opportunities. 

    On the second day, participants reviewed the proposed implementation plan, focusing on sustainable ecosystems, innovative funding, and good governance. 

    Open dialogue facilitated cross-sectoral collaboration, with group rapporteurs presenting their findings. 

    As the event concluded, the Director or Permanent Secretary of the Ministry of Marine and Blue Economy is expected to present the National Blue Economy Strategy, its implementation plan, and governance coordination mechanisms. The workshop ended with the adoption of a communiqué, validation of the strategy, and discussions that will shape the future
