LAGOS – Ugochinyere, the House of Representatives member for Ideato North South Federal Constituency, representing PDP in Imo State, mentioned that there was no Peoples Democratic Party( PDP) congress in Rivers State last weekend.
Ugochinyere pointed out that instead of a party congress, FCT Minister Nyesom Wike hosted a gathering with his friends.
The state congresses of the main opposition party occurred over the weekend, with reports of issues in various states like Rivers, Benue, Katsina, and Kogi.
In Rivers State, the congress went ahead despite a court order against it.
This situation has sparked a disagreement between the National Working Committee (NWC) that approved the congress and the PDP Governors Forum, which insisted on Governor Siminalayi Fubara retaining leadership in the state.
Additionally, FCT Minister Nyesom Wike and his group are asserting authority over the party structure following the congress that the state governor and his followers chose to boycott.
The PDP has indicated that the process is open to review by the party’s structures.

Ugochinyere, the spokesperson for G-60 federal lawmakers in the House of Representatives, criticized the event organized by the Wike faction as comical and extravagant.
The PDP official stated that there was no legitimate PDP Congress in Rivers State, alleging that Nyesom Wike hosted a social gathering and labeled it a state Congress to boost his image among his diminishing supporters.
The legislator, referencing the court order halting PDP congresses in the state, emphasized that the gathering organized by Wike was pointless.
He stated, “Believe me, there hasn’t been a genuine PDP state Congress in Rivers state.
Wike, in a bid to impress his declining supporters, hosted a social event and labeled it a state Congress.”
The court order in July clearly halted PDP congresses in Rivers State.
Despite this, some PDP members associated with the APC attempted to disguise family meetings as a PDP congress, which the lawmaker described as futile.
The legislator emphasized that the supposed Congress would be invalidated due to the existing court order against any congress in Rivers State.
