    Determined to advance the course of women, CARE Nigeria, in partnership with Church of the Brethren in Nigeria EYN Projects has worked with women’s formal and informal groups in Potiskum to create action plans addressing Gender-Based Violence (GBV), sexual and reproductive health rights, and women’s participation leadership. Each group set both short- and long-term goals, identified key activities and stakeholders, and created budgets for their initiatives. This approach, central to the WLIE model, empowers affected communities by shifting decision-making power to them. The WLIE groups are now seeking collaboration with relevant stakeholders in Potiskum LGA.

    In recognition of the importance, Women Lead in Emergency (WLIE) today organized a one day Conference held at the multipurpose hall, FCE Potiskum. It was attended by stakeholders which include traditional and religious leaders, market associations, lawyers, government officials, youth and women groups, security agencies among others too numerous to mention.

    In a welcome address, WLIE Leader Tinja Liatu Mazam said that they have a membership of 400 Women still they extend services to men, women, girls and boys in the targeted communities.
    She used the forum to appriciate Fika and Pataskum Emirate Councils for allowing CARE Nigeria to engage the community women and girls to overcome unwanted activities in the community without any fear or harrastment. Similarly, she appreciated the religious leaders, Potiskum Local Government for the continued support and encouragement. “To our religious leaders we can never thank you enough for your spiritual guidance and advice which has kept us going to this very hour. The security agencies, we are much grateful for the cover, support and protection in serving our community”.

    Panel discussion on the importance of Women in Leadership and other associated matters deliberated by the representatives of the Emirate Councils, NAPTIP, representative of youth groups, representative of CSOs, Mrs Zira gave life experience before and after coming of CARE- WLIE, by CARE Nigeria Manager. Others are the Chairman Potiskum Local Government Area represented by the Vice Chairman.

    District Head of Yindiski and Village Heads of Damboa A, B and others unanimously recognized the efforts of WLIE and CARE for the improvement in the lives of vulnerable people in their respective communities.

    The objective of the Women’s Conference is to empower WLIE women by providing a platform for increased visibility and networking. It aims to foster collaboration among stakeholders to strategize and support the advancement of women in leadership roles within their communities while developing a sustainable action plan for future women’s empowerment and leadership initiatives. The event featured inspiring discussions on women’s participation in leadership and decision-making, the impact of WLIE activities in Potiskum LGA, as well as a panel discussion where stakeholders and WLIE groupsl shared their experiences and contributions.

    These contributions and conversation will further help shape a collective approach towards ensuring the sustainability of these women’s groups.
