Woolwich tragedy: Police investigate fatal stabbing of 15-year-old boy

A murder investigation is underway following the tragic fatal stabbing of a 15-year-old boy in Woolwich, South East London, on Sunday, 22 September 2024.
Detective Chief Superintendent Trevor Lawry, who oversees policing in Greenwich, made the announcement in a statement expressing deep sorrow over the incident.
Police were called to reports of a disturbance on Eglinton Road at approximately 6:35 p.m. Upon arrival, officers discovered the teenage boy suffering from a stab wound.
Despite the best efforts of both police officers and paramedics from the London Ambulance Service, the boy succumbed to his injuries shortly thereafter.
Lawry conveyed his sympathies to the victim’s family, who are now being supported by specialist officers from the Metropolitan Police.
“Once again, we have had to tell a child’s family that their loved one has been killed in an act of violence using a knife,” he said. “Our thoughts are with them as they struggle to comprehend what has happened.”

Lawry highlighted the ongoing concern regarding the use of dangerous weapons, particularly “zombie-style” knives, which have been associated with a spate of violent incidents in recent years.
“The fact that a 15-year-old teenager, who had his whole life ahead of him, has been taken from his family in this way, is a stark and sobering reminder of the danger of these weapons,” he added, vowing to intensify efforts to remove such weapons from the streets.
In response to the incident, an increased police presence has been deployed in the Woolwich area to provide reassurance and address any concerns the community may have. Officers are working closely with specialist homicide detectives as the investigation progresses.
Lawry urged anyone with information to come forward, stressing that even the smallest detail could be crucial in solving the case.
“Were you in the area of Eglinton Road on Sunday evening around 6.30 p.m.? Did you see anyone running from the area?” He asked, appealing for witnesses or those with CCTV, doorbell camera, or dash cam footage to assist in the investigation.
