Yahaya Bello, the former governor of Kogi State, has replied to the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission’s (EFCC) invitation to discuss claims of financial misconduct during his administration.
Bello’s media office confirmed his appearance at the EFCC headquarters on Wednesday, following consultations with his family, legal team, and political associates. A statement released by the Yahaya Bello Media Office, signed by Director Ohiare Michael, emphasised Bello’s commitment to clearing his name.
The former governor faces 19 counts related to alleged money laundering of N80.2 billion, along with three others. Despite previously seeking legal protection to ensure due process, Bello chose to personally engage with the EFCC, stating he has “nothing to hide and nothing to fear.”
The statement highlighted Bello’s belief in President Bola Ahmed Tinubu’s efforts towards sustainable economic development and his support for the fight against corruption. “The former Governor believes firmly in the efforts of the administration of President Bola Ahmed Tinubu to place Nigeria on the path of sustainable economic development; and supports the fight against corruption in the country,” the statement read.
This development comes after Ola Olukoyede, the chairman of the EFCC, announced in April that he would step down if Bello’s case was dropped. Olukoyede pledged to carry the matter through to its completion and to hold those responsible for impeding Bello’s prior arrest accountable.
