‘You left unfillable void’: Tinubu mourns as elder cousin Dr. Ekemode dies

President Bola Tinubu has paid tribute to his elder cousin, Dr. Naheemdeen Ade Ekemode, who passed away at the age of 80.
Reflecting on their shared childhood and Ekemode’s distinguished career, the President honoured his cousin’s lasting contributions to medicine, especially in his over five decades as a gynaecologist.
Ekemode, who received his medical training in Egypt, was also a former chairman of the Lagos State Hospitals Management Board, where he played a pivotal role in advancing healthcare.
In a heartfelt message, Tinubu expressed the deep loss felt by their family, saying “Your passing has left an unfillable void in the hearts of our family. The fond memories we shared, from childhood through the many years we spent together, will forever remain in my heart.”
He reminisced about Ekemode’s impact both personally and professionally, stating: “I will always cherish your bright smile, infectious laughter, and unwavering kindness. As a physician, your compassion and care touched countless lives, and your legacy will endure through the people you healed, comforted, and uplifted.”

Tinubu fondly recalled Ekemode’s sense of humour and how he brought joy to those around him: “I fondly remember your sense of humour and your caring nature, which never failed to bring joy to those around you.”
Although they had recently celebrated Dr. Ekemode’s 80th birthday with hopes for more shared moments, Tinubu found solace in the thought that his cousin was now at peace.
“Though we celebrated your 80th birthday earlier this year with hope for more shared moments, we take solace in the knowledge that you are now at peace, free from pain and suffering.”
In his condolence message to the family, the President extended his thoughts and prayers: “In this time of grief, my thoughts and prayers are with your loved ones. The cherished memories we hold dear and the love you gave to us will provide strength and comfort during these difficult times.”
“You may no longer be with us in body, but your spirit and the bonds we shared will live on in our hearts forever. May Allah grant you eternal rest, and His mercy and peace be with you always,” he added.
