The Police in Anambra State have begun a probe into reports of 19 missing rifles in the Awada community, Idemili North Council of the state.

It was alleged that of 27 pump action guns donated for security services in the community, only eight were seen and handed over when the community came to perform the function at their town hall some days ago.

The alleged disappearance of the guns was said to have heightened concerns and fears in the community.

But the Police in a statement on Thursday morning frowned at the publication, describing it “as a publication to promote personal agenda and seek attention”.

Police spokesman Toochukwu Ikenga in a statement noted “the unprofessional attitude of some media persons who deliberately published stories to achieve a selfish interest, especially without recourse to the authority’s concern.”

He added: “It is disheartening that when you go through the report, is clear that a case of such magnitude was not reported to any security agency or any concerned authority.

“Therefore the Command sees it as information targeted to cause tension in the state, to promote a rift between two groups, and personal agenda but will be investigated.”

He however, assured that Command will continue to work with other security agencies and recognized stakeholders to enforce the law, maintain public order and public safety.

Meanwhile, the Police in Aguata council have rescued an abducted victim and recovered his sky blue Toyota Camry.

The officers were said to have responded swiftly when they got the report of the abduction at about 4:30 pm on Wednesday along Umuchiana village, Ekwulobia, Aguata Council.

“During the hot chase by the Police team, the criminals shoved the victim out of the vehicle at Ndike village in Orumba North LGA and drove off for escape,” Ikenga said.

“The Officers sustained the trail on the abductors and the criminals abandoned the vehicle along Umunze road Orumba South Council and ran into a nearby bush. Operations are still ongoing for the possible arrest of the hoodlums.”

The police added that the victim has been debriefed and reunited with his family and hailed the gallantry performance displayed by the Operatives.

Ikenga assured residents of the state in liaison with other security agencies would do everything within the law to ensure they deny criminals the opportunity to foment troubles and re-group anywhere in the state.
