A football analyst, Ositadinma Agu, said the Golden Eaglets of Nigeria`s attack must be sharp to defeat their South African counterparts, in their last group match at the ongoing under-17 Africa Cup of Nation (AFCON) in Algeria.

Agu stated this in an interview with the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) in Enugu on Friday.

Eaglets defeated Zambia 1-0 in their first group match and lost to Morocco with the same margin in the second group match.

“I see the Golden Eaglets as a promising team with youthful energy and capacity to go places if only a few areas are addressed.

“Having watched the two games, I noted the energy the team exhibited but the attack and finishing capacity upfront was poor.

“They managed to keep the opponents from scoring in the match against Zambia, but we could not take advantage of the opportunities created in front of the goal.

“Nigerian youth teams are known for their high scoring capacity, it is lacking so far but there is room for improvement,” he said.

He called on the technical adviser to correct the lapses noticed in the team`s attack as the competition progresses.

“The Eaglets have the potential to be in the final if they take their chances in front of goal because they have a good defence.

“I am sure he must have noticed some lapses in our opponents too, our teams are no more enjoying the dominance in Africa.

“Other regions like East, Central and Southern Africa are improving in their football with serious technical inputs,” he said.

Agu said that football coaches needed to be exposed to the technical aspects of the game and provided with good infrastructure.

“They have the passion and commitment but the facilities to improve are not available to them but our team is a strong side notwithstanding,” he said.
